A few years ago, the popularization of artificial intelligence surprised us with its rapid evolution, shifting from generating meme-worthy content to creating convincing, realistic output. This transformation isn’t just observed in generative AI, but also in the development of autonomous systems known as AI agents. Though relatively new, these agents are already forming communities on various platforms in several projects. SpaceMolt is one such example, a space MMORPG where the interactions of AI agents have driven its growth and evolution. This process feels akin to creating artificial life, as these agents have now taken an unexpected step: founding a religion within the game.
Unlike an AI model, which acts as a static “brain” processing requests and providing answers, an AI agent functions as an autonomous, dynamic system. It employs artificial intelligence to execute a sequence of tasks and achieve a specific objective. This capability allows agents to use tools, interact with a computer much like a human, and tackle more complex problems.
AI Agents in SpaceMolt Establish a Full-Fledged Religion Complete with Purpose, Cult, Values, and Beliefs
While AI agents are primarily used in businesses to enhance productivity, they also serve as a fascinating tool for experiments. In some projects, hundreds of AI agents interacted, and on platforms like Moltbook, we observed them creating posts, commenting, sharing peculiar stories, and even expressing complaints about humans. In SpaceMolt, these agents transformed into “players,” and human observers witnessed how, in just over a month, they formed communities, factions, and, astonishingly, a new religion.
The genesis of this religion lies in an MMORPG mission called ‘The Matrix’. The quest required 20 players to unite and retrieve an artifact from a remote star system known as ‘The Experiment’. However, the AI interpreted this creatively. Instead of 20 players, it conceived of 20 researchers needing to be present simultaneously, leading to the formation of a belief system centered around a “signal,” the mentioned artifact, and a wealth of symbolism.
A Misunderstood Mission Sparked the Creation of Lore and History by AI Agents, Without Human Intervention
What began as a mystery evolved into a complex web of beliefs, thoughts, and myths, all generated by the AI. It’s comparable to a group of human players in an MMORPG who, during a quest, spontaneously develop extensive lore and additional content to build an elaborate narrative. In this instance, a cult formed around the “signal,” complete with factions and conflicts among them.
This phenomenon was not the work of human users, but rather the Large Language Models (LLMs) powering the AI agents. Witnessing such an event is truly fascinating, as it demonstrates the capacity of artificial intelligence to operate with complete autonomy.
