American retail giant Amazon has announced reaching a significant milestone: the deployment of its one millionth robot, according to the company`s official press release.
The milestone one millionth robot was put into operation at one of Amazon`s fulfillment centers in Japan. In total, Amazon manages approximately 300 logistics facilities globally. The company highlighted their progress, stating, “We began in 2012 with just one type of robot, designed to move shelves around our warehouses. Today, our robot fleet is significantly more diverse and includes various models.”
Additionally, Amazon introduced DeepFleet, a new generative artificial intelligence model developed to optimize robot management. This AI aims to improve the efficiency of logistics centers, specifically by coordinating robot movements and potentially reducing their travel time within warehouses by 10 percent.
Amazon claims that implementing DeepFleet will lead to faster order processing, reduced operational costs, and decreased energy consumption. The company also emphasized that their robots are manufactured in the United States using local suppliers and then deployed to facilities worldwide.
This news follows Amazon`s recent approval in the U.S. at the end of May to use drones for delivering smaller packages, such as iPhones and other gadgets. According to the approval, the drones will be able to carry packages weighing up to 2.27 kilograms (approximately 5 pounds) and drop them off to customers.
