Following a series of leaks, AMD has officially disclosed the pricing for its latest flagship consumer processor, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition. Initial reports, originating from the UK, suggested a recommended retail price of £829 including taxes (equivalent to €953 or $1,113).
Subsequently, David McAfee, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Ryzen CPU and Radeon Graphics division, officially confirmed the dollar price via his X account. As anticipated, this CPU comes with a premium price tag, set at $899 plus taxes in the United States. This marks a significant milestone as it’s the first consumer CPU from the company to approach the $1,000 threshold. Previously, AMD’s most expensive consumer offering for this market was the AMD FX-9590, launched in 2013 at $799.

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, despite McAfee’s promotion on X as a processor ‘built for developers and content creators,’ appears to lack compelling justification for its existence even before its release.
According to official AMD data, this new processor is positioned as 29% more expensive than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, yet it offers only a modest average performance gain of 7%. Depending on the workload, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 performs between 5% and 13% faster than its predecessor. Furthermore, considering that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is often available at a discounted price, the new CPU effectively becomes nearly 35% more expensive. Given its price-to-performance ratio, its value proposition seems highly questionable.

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition essentially mirrors the 9950X3D but with double the L3 cache. It retains the 16 cores and 32 threads, based on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture, with a base clock of 4.30 GHz and a boost clock of 5.60 GHz (100 MHz lower than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D). The primary distinction lies in its integrated 192 MB of L3 cache, an increase from 128 MB. This expanded cache also raises the base TDP from 170W to 200W, suggesting that a high-end liquid cooling solution will be crucial to maximize its performance potential.
As previously highlighted, AMD faces a significant challenge in justifying the price of its Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition. Consumers are asked to pay approximately 35% more for a processor with a 20% higher base TDP, all for an average performance uplift of just 7%.
Initially, this processor might have been positioned as ‘the world’s fastest gaming CPU.’ However, it appears that games do not significantly benefit from the increased cache. Consequently, AMD has shifted its marketing narrative from X3D CPUs being primarily for gamers to presenting this model as a breakthrough for professional use. The processor is scheduled for release on April 22nd.
