Research published in Neurology suggests a link between sweeteners and cognitive decline.

Researchers from the University of São Paulo have identified a potential link between the consumption of certain artificial sweeteners and an accelerated decline in cognitive functions. Their findings were published in the scientific journal Neurology.

An eight-year study involving over 12,000 adult participants revealed that individuals who frequently consumed low- and no-calorie sweeteners experienced a 62% faster decline in memory and processing speed compared to those with minimal consumption. This corresponds to an additional year and a half of natural brain aging. The effect was particularly pronounced in individuals with diabetes and participants under 60 years old.

The highest risks were associated with sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, sorbitol, and xylitol. These substances are commonly found in diet sodas, energy drinks, yogurts, and various low-calorie desserts. Tagatose was the sole exception, as no negative impact on cognitive functions was observed for it.

The study`s authors emphasize that their findings indicate only a correlation, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, and strongly recommend further research. Nevertheless, these results already prompt serious consideration regarding the presumed harmlessness of sugar alternatives.

It is worth noting that scientists previously identified physical activity as one of the most accessible methods to slow down biological aging. Regular exercise can influence the body`s “epigenetic clocks,” helping to reduce its actual biological age.
