A joyful event occurred at the Alushta Aquarium, located on the southern coast of Crimea: four rare stingrays were born. This news was confirmed by the aquarium`s director, Viktor Zhilenko.
Zhilenko noted that the birth of four offspring at once from Amazonian stingrays of the Leopoldi and Motoro species is a significant and rare occurrence for the aquarium.
To ensure their safety, the newborn stingrays were promptly moved to a separate tank.
The aquarium director explained that Amazonian stingrays, including the parents – the black Leopoldi with white spots and the brown Motoro – are not known for their friendliness and possess venomous spines on their tails capable of inflicting serious injuries. Since the young were already born with spines, the staff exercises particular caution when interacting with them.
Zhilenko added that it is expected that within a few days, the young stingrays will develop an appetite and begin actively searching for food on the aquarium floor.
Staff have already prepared finely chopped worms and mussels for their first feeding, providing easily digestible food for the young.
