Professor Powis: Cancer Survival Rates to Quadruple in 50 Years

Survival rates following oncology treatment are projected to quadruple over the next half-century. This optimistic forecast was shared by Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Director for NHS England, during an interview with The Telegraph.

Professor Powis indicated that incidences of lung cancer are expected to become “much rarer.” He attributed this to the effectiveness demonstrated by new vaccines in clinical trials, coupled with advances in testing that allow for the identification of the genetic profiles of lung and breast cancer tumors.

According to the professor, the pace at which cancer treatments are evolving means that receiving a cancer diagnosis should no longer be universally perceived as a death sentence.

In a separate scientific finding, researchers previously reported that up to 15.6 million individuals born between 2008 and 2017 could potentially develop stomach cancer during their lives. The study`s authors estimated that the primary cause in 76 percent of these cases is infection with the Helicobacter pylori bacteria.

Furthermore, earlier studies have established a link between air pollution and an increase in various types of cancer, including lung cancer in people who have never smoked.
