When choosing how to exercise during hot weather, it is best to focus on activities like swimming or cycling, according to cardiologist and anesthesiologist-intensivist Anton Vakhlyaev. These are the most appropriate types of activity during such periods.
“I would prioritize activities that do not generate a lot of internal heat, unlike strength training. For example, swimming or bike rides – but specifically leisurely rides, not intense sporting sessions,” he explained.
Vakhlyaev pointed out that when dealing with physical activity in abnormally hot conditions, it`s wise to learn from the practices of southern countries and regions.
“Southern countries and regions follow a principle similar to the siesta: physical activity, including work and exercise, takes place in the early morning hours and late evening, sometimes even at night, while during the peak heat, activity is minimal or zero,” he added.
These same guidelines apply when planning workouts: it is necessary to select morning or evening hours for sports – times when the heat is not at its peak – or alternatively, to train in an air-conditioned environment.
