Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, expressed his view during the OpenAI Podcast that contemporary personal computers are ill-suited for the demands of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. This point was highlighted by the publication Windows Central.
The CEO of the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot stated that current personal computers (PCs) were designed for a pre-AI era. Altman remarked, “Now we live in a different world, and what you expect from hardware and software is changing quite rapidly.”
Altman criticized currently available PCs, emphasizing their poor ability to understand context or anticipate user needs. He also suggested that in the near future, users might move away from traditional PCs and smartphones entirely, favoring more intuitive ways to interact with technology than screen-based interfaces.
Journalists from Windows Central noted a potential inconsistency, recalling Altman`s earlier statements in 2024 that the upcoming AI revolution wouldn`t necessitate widespread replacement of existing computers and devices. The publication speculates that the OpenAI chief`s current remarks might hint at the need for a new class of devices, potentially like the one Altman is reportedly developing with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive.
