MOSCOW – Russian Railways (RZD) is exploring initiatives to enhance the travel experience for passengers accompanied by their animal companions.
Russian Railways (RZD) is currently considering the creation of special waiting zones at train stations specifically designed for passengers traveling with animals. Ivan Kolesnikov, the company`s Deputy General Director, made this announcement in an interview. The primary goal of these designated areas is to offer a convenient and comfortable space for pet owners, particularly those who are in transit or arrive well in advance of their train`s departure.
This new proposal builds upon RZD`s previous efforts to make rail travel more pet-friendly. As of August 2024, RZD had already equipped over 170 railway stations across Russia with specialized `pet zones`. These existing zones feature spacious enclosures complete with food, water, and absorbent pads to maintain cleanliness.
In addition to these established facilities, the company has also been conducting trials for `islands` – dedicated areas for dog walking – located at stations. These areas are intended for use during train layovers or prior to departure, providing a much-needed convenience for passengers and their canine companions.
