Scientists at the University of Sydney have developed an innovative method to boost the efficacy of minoxidil, a key medication for treating androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male and female pattern baldness. Their research, published in Advanced Healthcare Materials (AHM), demonstrates that stevioside, a natural sweetener derived from the stevia plant, can significantly enhance the drug`s penetration through the skin barrier.

The primary challenge with minoxidil lies in its low solubility and poor skin permeability, which often hinders its effective delivery to hair follicles. By incorporating stevioside into a dissolving patch, the researchers observed a marked improvement in the drug`s absorption and its transport to target cells.

Experiments conducted on mice showed that this combination effectively activated hair follicles, prompting them into an active growth phase and stimulating the emergence of new hair. The researchers highlight that utilizing this natural component not only increases the treatment`s effectiveness but also makes it a safer and more sustainable option for long-term application.

In a related study from September, it was revealed that frequent consumption of sugary sodas and alcohol correlates with an increased risk of hair loss. Conversely, maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D and iron was found to actively promote healthy hair growth and strengthening.
