Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has declared that an ambitious target will be met by the close of the year: half of the United States` residents will have the ability to utilize Tesla`s self-driving taxi services. This significant announcement was made during the company`s second-quarter 2025 earnings conference call, as reported by Mashable.

Musk elaborated on his vision, stating, “Robotaxis will be accessible to half of the U.S. population.” He underscored, however, that the widespread availability of Tesla`s autonomous vehicles is contingent upon obtaining essential regulatory and governmental approvals. The company is actively pursuing these permits to launch operations in key areas, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, and various other locations.

The tech magnate expressed confidence in expanding the robotaxi service`s footprint at a “hyperexponential pace” while assuring that Tesla would proceed with extreme caution. Journalists have recalled Musk`s earlier promise from early July, where he suggested that the robotaxi service would be fully operational in the San Francisco Bay Area within a couple of months. Currently, according to reports, Tesla operates a modest fleet of only 10 to 20 autonomous vehicles. The Tesla self-driving taxi service officially commenced operations in the U.S. in late June.

In related news from late July, Elon Musk also confirmed that Tesla has initiated the production of a more affordable electric car model. This streamlined version of the popular Model Y crossover is anticipated to hit the market before the end of the current year.
