Rospotrebnadzor, Russia`s federal service for consumer rights protection, has published comprehensive advice on how to correctly select high-quality milk. The agency underscores that good milk should be uniform in consistency, entirely free of sediment, and possess no off-odors. Consumers are therefore urged to closely inspect its appearance, color, and smell before purchase.
In response to the wide array of dairy products available in retail outlets, Rospotrebnadzor advises beginning with an examination of the packaging`s integrity. It is crucial to avoid buying milk if the carton or bottle is damaged, dented, or compromised in any way. Furthermore, clear and legible information regarding the expiration date, recommended storage conditions, and appropriate temperature range is essential.
Representatives from the agency clarified that because milk is fundamentally a single-component food item, its label might not feature an extensive “ingredients” list. Phrases such as “Made from cow`s milk” or “Made from whole milk” are considered acceptable and commonly found. Labels might also specify “Ingredients: whole milk, skim milk,” indicating the constituents used in the product.
Rospotrebnadzor particularly stressed the critical importance of keeping milk refrigerated. When acquiring milk from a store, consumers should verify that the product has been stored at the correct temperature. Any warming of the product while in retail environments can detrimentally affect its quality and freshness.
Additionally, it is recommended that consumers take the time to learn about the characteristics of different types of milk. This knowledge will help in choosing a product that best aligns with individual dietary needs and preferences. Reaffirming its key recommendation, Rospotrebnadzor reiterated: “When selecting milk, pay close attention to its appearance, color, and smell. Quality milk must be homogeneous, without sediment, and free from any foreign odors.”
