Kaspersky Lab: Scammers actively exploit intercom key replacement scheme to target personal data

A growing number of fraudsters are exploiting a new scheme to deceive Russians: claiming there`s a need to replace intercom keys. This scam has become notably widespread, with perpetrators informing victims about an impending visit from a technician who will provide a new intercom key. Following this, they request a unique four-digit code, ostensibly for system registration and to enable door access.

However, as Sergey Golovanov, a principal expert at Kaspersky Lab, explained, the true objective of these criminals is to obtain access codes for victims` personal information service accounts. The deception doesn`t stop there. Days later, these same fraudsters may initiate further contact, this time impersonating representatives of regulatory bodies. They falsely claim the victim`s personal account has been compromised and attempt to instill fear by alleging a loan has been fraudulently issued in the victim`s name.

In light of these escalating threats, the expert strongly advises individuals to enable two-factor authentication on all their accounts. Furthermore, he recommends refraining from conversing with unknown individuals and, critically, never sharing confidential or personal data with anyone who contacts them unexpectedly.

Similar fraudulent tactics have been observed previously, including schemes involving the fake “registration of magnetic keys” for access barriers, indicating a pattern of exploiting everyday access control mechanisms for criminal gain.
