A Stanford University study, published in JAMA Health Forum, revealed that COVID-19 vaccination saved over 2.5 million lives and preserved approximately 15 million years of life worldwide.
Analysis of data from 2020 to 2024 showed that roughly 5,400 vaccine doses were needed to save one life, and 900 doses to preserve one additional year of life.
The greatest benefit of vaccination was observed among the elderly: nearly 90% of those saved were over 60 years old. The effect was particularly notable during the spread of the Omicron variant. Timely vaccination played a crucial role, especially for individuals who had not been previously infected.
This research underscores the critical importance of vaccination in the fight against the pandemic, particularly for high-risk individuals.
