Laboratory experiments conducted on mice demonstrated compelling results. The ketogenic diet was observed to notably increase the population of beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus johnsonii and L. reuteri, while simultaneously decreasing the levels of potentially pathogenic microorganisms. These positive alterations in gut flora were directly linked to several crucial improvements within the brain: enhanced mitochondrial function, better balance of neurotransmitters, and optimized lipid metabolism. A particularly striking impact was noted in female mice possessing the APOE4 gene. In this specific group, the diet led to a remarkable restoration of microbiome diversity and a normalization of key metabolic indicators within the brain.
