Microsoft, a global market leader by capitalization, faces significant challenges within its console division, despite the continued success of Windows and Office. The Microsoft Gaming and Xbox division has endured a period of declining sales, numerous canceled projects and games, the massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and slower-than-anticipated growth for Game Pass. To avoid repeating the struggles of the Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft is reportedly developing ‘Project Helix,’ a new console with a distinct concept. While it was initially believed that Project Helix’s home console would be Microsoft’s last, new information suggests a portable Xbox is also in development, potentially launching around the same time.
Among all Xbox consoles, the Xbox 360 generation achieved the highest sales and popularity, even surpassing Sony’s PS3 at the time—a remarkable feat not seen before or since. The Xbox One, while performing reasonably well, was ultimately outsold comfortably by the PlayStation 4. The current Xbox Series X and S consoles have struggled significantly in sales, failing to gain substantial market share even during the prolonged PS5 chip shortage that made Sony’s console difficult to acquire for years.
The Portable Xbox Set to Launch Alongside Project Helix Home Console in 2027
Gamers consistently favor Sony’s consoles, a trend likely to persist with the upcoming PS6 and next-generation Xbox if Microsoft doesn’t introduce significant changes. While a lower price point could attract users, sharing AMD hardware would likely result in similar production costs for both companies. Microsoft’s chosen strategy is differentiation: as previously hinted by the new CEO, Project Helix will function as a “console-PC” running Windows, offering compatibility with games from Steam, Epic Games, and Xbox. Although earlier rumors suggested this might be Microsoft’s final console if it didn’t succeed, new reports now indicate a portable Xbox is also in the pipeline.
Discussions about a portable Xbox are not new. When Microsoft restructured its console sector and mentioned plans for both portable and home consoles, the possibility of a handheld device became clear. However, rumors surrounding its release date have frequently shifted. Initial expectations for a portable Xbox by late 2025 did not materialize, with only a collaboration with ASUS emerging instead. According to the latest rumors, all signs point to a 2027 reveal for the future portable Xbox, and it’s highly probable that Microsoft will launch it alongside Project Helix.
Microsoft to Face Direct Rivalry with Sony’s PS6 and PS6 Portable
If these plans come to fruition, Microsoft will have a home console + portable combination, indicating a direct battle against Sony’s anticipated PS6 and PS6 Portable, as Sony is also expected to re-enter the handheld market. Project Helix is envisioned as a very powerful home console, conceptually similar to a Steam Machine, though potentially more expensive. It will be capable of playing games like an Xbox console in a dedicated mode. Its primary advantage is expected to be a high-end AMD RDNA 5 GPU, positioning it to comfortably outperform the PS6 in terms of raw performance.
Regarding the portable console, specific details for the Xbox variant remain unknown, unlike those that have surfaced for the PS6 Portable. Sony’s handheld is expected to employ a 3nm AMD Canis SoC featuring a 6-core CPU (4 Zen 6c Cores + 2 Zen 6 LP Cores), an RDNA 5 iGPU with 16 CUs, and at least 16 GB of LPDDR5X-8533 RAM. For Microsoft’s portable Xbox to effectively compete against Sony, it will need to offer either superior performance or a more competitive price point than its rival.
