Initially introduced in 2021 as the AI assistant replacing Cortana in Windows 11, Copilot has since evolved significantly. Through a strategic collaboration with OpenAI, its AI capabilities were expanded, leading to the launch of Copilot for Windows, Microsoft 365 Copilot (integrated into Office programs), and later, Copilot+ PCs offering exclusive features. Microsoft extensively promoted these advancements, even integrating a dedicated Copilot key onto keyboards. However, despite this significant investment and promotion, Microsoft has now clarified that Copilot AI is intended primarily for leisure and entertainment, cautioning users against relying on it for serious or important tasks, as it is prone to errors.

Unlike many competitors, Microsoft did not focus on developing its own core AI models. Instead, it made a substantial investment in OpenAI, funding the startup from its early stages. Microsoft anticipated OpenAI’s success, but even they were reportedly surprised by the company’s meteoric rise, particularly with ChatGPT becoming the world’s most popular AI, surpassing even Google’s Gemini. Despite other tech giants pouring resources into developing proprietary AI, Microsoft persisted in bolstering Copilot, establishing it as its distinct AI brand.

Microsoft Declares Copilot AI Solely for Leisure, Advising Against Reliance

Copilot is deployed on tens of millions of PCs worldwide. Despite Microsoft’s prior emphasis on its ability to enhance productivity and its utility for businesses through Microsoft 365 Copilot, the company’s stance appears to have shifted. A review of the updated Microsoft Copilot terms of use reveals a clear warning: the AI is designated “for entertainment purposes only.” The terms explicitly state that users should not rely on Copilot’s responses, acknowledging that artificial intelligence systems are prone to errors and inaccuracies. Consequently, for any important or sensitive subject matter, users are advised to exercise extreme caution, as reliance on Copilot’s output is entirely at their own risk.

Microsoft Warns of Potential Ads in Copilot, Reserves Right to Modify Features and Performance

Furthermore, the warnings extend to other aspects of Copilot’s operation, including the potential for advertisements during use. This follows a recent incident where GitHub Copilot temporarily displayed 11,000 ads within Pull Requests, a concern that GitHub subsequently addressed by stating it would not permit advertising on the platform, leading to their removal. The advisory also clarifies that Copilot utilizes both automated and manual (human) data processing. Therefore, users are strongly cautioned against sharing any personal or sensitive information with the AI. Microsoft further states that certain experimental features are part of ‘Copilot Labs’ and may be modified or removed at the company’s discretion. Similarly, Microsoft reserves the right to limit Copilot’s speed and overall performance at any time.
