Researchers have found that dietary changes can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of chronic headaches that develop after brain injuries. Scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and the National Institutes of Health conducted a clinical study, the results of which were published in the Journal of Neurotrauma. The study involved 122 patients suffering from post-traumatic headaches.

For 12 weeks, participants were divided into two groups: one followed a standard diet with a typical ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, while the other adhered to a special diet high in omega-3s (sources: salmon, tuna) and low in omega-6s (sources: corn and sunflower oil). All essential food items for the study were provided to the participants.

The study results showed that participants on the “omega-3 diet” experienced approximately two fewer headache days per month, and their pain intensity decreased by 30% compared to the control group. Blood analyses confirmed an increase in anti-inflammatory compounds linked to omega-3 consumption.

The study authors emphasize that this dietary approach could serve as a safe and accessible complement to existing treatments, especially for military personnel and others affected by traumatic brain injuries, as there are currently no officially approved therapies for chronic post-traumatic headaches.

It is worth noting that scientists previously demonstrated the ability of simple physical activity to lower the risk of chronic diseases. For instance, daily walking for more than 100 minutes can significantly prevent the development of chronic lower back pain.
