The nearly one-million-year-old “Yunxian 2” skull has been classified as belonging to the Asian branch of Homo longi, known as the “Dragon Man.”

A unique fossil, the “Yunxian 2” skull discovered in China, has undergone meticulous reconstruction. The research, published in Science, reveals that high-precision CT scans and digital restoration successfully removed millennia of deformation, restoring its original contours. Analysis of the skull`s morphology unveiled an unusual combination of archaic traits, typical of Homo erectus, and more advanced features characteristic of later Homo species.

Comparative analysis with other paleoanthropological findings allowed “Yunxian 2” to be classified as a representative of the Asian Homo longi lineage, also known as the “Dragon Man.” The study confirmed that this branch is a “sister lineage” to Homo sapiens and likely included the Denisovans. This discovery thus illuminates long-standing debates in paleoanthropology regarding the evolutionary divergence pathways of ancient hominins.

Scientists concluded that the split between the Homo longi and Homo sapiens branches occurred approximately 1.3 million years ago, significantly earlier than previously thought. Such an early divergence, coupled with rapid evolutionary rates in both lineages, explains the mosaic pattern of traits observed in the “Yunxian 2” skull. The researchers emphasize that this find holds key importance for understanding the origins not only of Denisovans but also the earliest stages of the modern human lineage.
