As PC hardware becomes increasingly powerful and efficient, its cost continues to climb due to various market forces. The soaring demand for AI technologies has driven up prices for DRAM, NAND Flash, and VRAM, making components like RAM, SSDs, and graphics cards significantly more expensive. Naturally, the last thing any user wants is for these valuable parts to fail, necessitating a costly replacement. In an extraordinary incident, a Chinese user tragically lost all his room’s belongings in a devastating fire. Miraculously, however, his NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU emerged from the blaze, and after being inspected by the renowned expert ‘Brother Zhang,’ it was confirmed to be largely undamaged and fully functional.
The introduction of NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 in 2022 ushered in a new concern for PC enthusiasts: the risk of graphics cards catching fire. Early reports of burned GPUs emerged shortly after the 4090’s launch, followed by other cards utilizing the problematic 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 connector. While the RTX 4090 was commonly affected, there were also isolated incidents involving models like the RTX 4080.

Fortunately, there have been no documented cases of low-power GPUs like the RTX 4060 succumbing to connector-related thermal issues. These cards typically use a traditional 8-pin PCIe power connector, making them far less susceptible to the problems associated with 16-pin connectors. The fire that engulfed the Chinese user’s room was attributed to an electric heater, which destroyed all the furniture and left the entire PC charred. Hoping to salvage the graphics card, the owner sent it to ‘Brother Zhang,’ a renowned expert in computer and GPU repairs, known for his ability to fix even severely damaged components—including an RTX 3080 Ti reportedly broken by a client’s ex-girlfriend.
Initially, the situation seemed hopeless, but the expert technician, ‘Brother Zhang,’ expressed optimism after a preliminary inspection. Upon carefully removing the completely burnt casing and fans, he discovered that the GPU’s PCB (Printed Circuit Board) was, surprisingly, in good condition, aside from being covered in dust. No components appeared broken, pierced, or lost to the flames. An interesting observation was several capacitors adhered to the backplate, likely dislodged from the motherboard during the intense heat.

When the technician began testing voltages across the GPU’s PCB, everything functioned correctly, indicating a stable electrical signal throughout and, crucially, no short circuit. For ‘Brother Zhang,’ who frequently tackles highly complex repairs, this case likely felt relatively straightforward. After confirming the integrity of the board, he meticulously cleaned the graphics card using water, soap, and a brush, ensuring it was thoroughly spotless, as there were no fundamental repairs required.
A cautionary note: attempting such cleaning at home requires ensuring the card is absolutely bone-dry before reinstallation and use, to prevent irreversible damage.
The next step for ‘Brother Zhang’ was to acquire a new heatsink and shroud. Since he didn’t have an identical replacement on hand, he ordered one. The damaged card was identified as an ASUS RTX 4060 DUAL EVO OC, so he specifically requested a cooler for the same model, albeit in a different color – white. After assembling the card with its new cooling solution, a stress test using Furmark revealed an impressively cool operating temperature of just 56 °C.
