In a video address to workers in the coal industry, Russian President Vladimir Putin commemorated the legendary achievement of Alexey Stakhanov`s brigade, noting that their record-setting coal extraction feat from a single shift celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.

Putin extended his congratulations to the coal industry employees on their professional holiday, emphasizing that miners “always work diligently.”

“In our country, the labor of miners has always commanded deserved respect. This year marks 90 years since the global record set by Alexey Stakhanov`s famous brigade, which produced 102 tons of coal in a single shift, exceeding the then-established norm by almost 15 times. This achievement was a result of an innovative approach to labor organization. Donbas miners at that time demonstrated that work could be done significantly more efficiently and effectively. The day of the Stakhanovites` labor feat became a national miners` holiday,” Putin stated.

The head of state recalled that while the holiday was officially recognized 12 years after the celebrated achievement, “the entire country was already observing it on the last Sunday of August.”

“We continue this glorious tradition. And it is a wonderful occasion today to offer our warmest words to the miners,” the president concluded.
