The Dangers of Excessive Sweet Drink Consumption

The Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) has issued a warning regarding the significant health risks posed by sweet carbonated beverages. According to the agency, regular consumption of these drinks substantially increases the risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, and various metabolic disorders. The situation is particularly concerning for children and teenagers, whose eating habits are still forming, making them highly vulnerable to the negative effects of excessive sugar intake.

“Reducing sugar consumption is a critically important step towards improving well-being and lowering the likelihood of chronic diseases,” Rospotrebnadzor emphasized, urging the public to reconsider their dietary choices.

Healthy Alternatives for Quenching Thirst

As the best means to quench thirst, Rospotrebnadzor experts unanimously recommend clean drinking water. It contains no calories or artificial additives and is ideal for maintaining the body`s daily hydration. The recommended amount of water consumption is individual and depends on factors such as age, level of physical activity, and climatic conditions, but general recommendations suggest regular intake of small portions of water throughout the day.

Interestingly, water temperature can be varied to achieve different effects: cold water is effectively invigorating, while warm water quenches thirst better in cool weather and promotes normal digestion.

How to Enhance Water Flavor Without Sugar?

For those who prefer beverages with a more distinct flavor, Rospotrebnadzor offers simple and healthy methods: adding fresh fruits, cucumber slices, lemon, or mint leaves to water. This allows for a pleasant aroma and taste without adding extra calories. To prepare such a drink, simply slice the chosen ingredients thinly or mash berries, add them to water, and let it infuse in the refrigerator for one to three hours.

Furthermore, herbal and fruit teas can be an excellent alternative. The variety of flavors, from chamomile and mint to hibiscus, karkade, and various berry blends, allows everyone to find something they enjoy. These beverages can be consumed both warm and chilled. When brewing them, it is recommended to strictly follow instructions for time and temperature, and to limit or completely exclude added sugar.

Wholesome Homemade Beverages

Homemade compotes and fruit drinks (morses) made from fresh or dried berries and fruits are also a great substitute for sweet sodas. A small amount of honey can be used for sweetness, or it can be omitted entirely if the berries and fruits are sufficiently sweet. Such homemade beverages should preferably be stored in tightly sealed bottles in the refrigerator for no more than 2-3 days.
