The acting governor of Russia`s Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, has conveyed his sincere appreciation to President Vladimir Putin for posthumously bestowing the prestigious title of Hero of Russia upon the Red Army soldier, Alexey Berest.

This commendation follows a recent decree signed by President Putin, which officially recognized Alexey Berest, a pivotal figure in the historic storming of the Reichstag during the Great Patriotic War, with this distinguished national honor.

In a message posted on his official Telegram channel, Slyusar stated: “I extend my heartfelt thanks to our President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, for posthumously awarding our esteemed compatriot, Alexey Berest, the title of Hero of Russia. It was under the resolute leadership of Junior Lieutenant Berest that Sergeant Mikhail Yegorov and Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria famously raised the iconic Victory Banner over the Reichstag. The residents of the Don region have ardently awaited this significant recognition for a considerable time.”

Slyusar further highlighted another profoundly heroic act from Berest`s life, noting that he tragically lost his life on November 3, 1970, in Selmash while courageously attempting to save a young girl from an approaching train.
