Russian nuclear physicist Andrei Ozharovsky, who was detained while measuring radiation levels in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, proposed a “dosimeter duel” to local security forces. They suspected his measurement results were inaccurate, the scientist told the Kommersant newspaper (“Ъ”).

Ozharovsky was apprehended by police and migration services on August 19. By August 21, he had been released. The Russian national informed “Ъ” that he had provided detailed testimony to Mongolian intelligence regarding the purpose of his trip and the outcomes of his work.

The scientist added that his case was then transferred from intelligence to the police. Ozharovsky is suspected of using an unregistered device in Mongolia and of providing incorrect dosimeter readings. While he admits fault for the lack of equipment registration, the physicist is convinced that his dosimeter readings are accurate.

“The only way to determine who is right and who is wrong is to return to the desert and repeat our measurements,” the scientist stated. He suggested that the security forces conduct repeat measurements using two different instruments and compare the results.

It was previously reported that Ozharovsky traveled to Mongolia at the invitation of local environmental activists who oppose uranium mining.
