A new RZD coupe car on display at the PRO//Movement.Expo exhibition.
Russian Railways (RZD) has for the first time showcased its latest generation of coupe carriages to the public. These innovative wagons boast extended berths up to 2 meters long, separate shower cabins, and specially designed compartments for passengers traveling with children. The grand unveiling took place on August 28, 2025, at the international railway salon “PRO//Movement.Expo” in St. Petersburg.
Enhanced Comfort and Spacious Design
According to an official statement from RZD, sleeping berths have been significantly improved with increased dimensions: the width of the shelves is 3 centimeters wider, the upper berth is 16 centimeters longer, and the lower berth is 6 centimeters longer. In addition to two standard restrooms, the carriages are equipped with an extra shower room, providing passengers with greater convenience during their journey. Passenger comfort is further enhanced by an individual temperature control system available in each compartment, allowing travelers to set their preferred climate.
Modern Amenities for Every Traveler
Every coupe is now thoughtfully fitted with essential amenities including power outlets, light switches, and personal safes, ensuring both connectivity and security for belongings. For the convenience of lower-berth passengers, wireless smartphone chargers are seamlessly integrated into the tables. Meanwhile, upper-berth travelers benefit from individual fold-out tables, perfectly suitable for using tablets and laptops, making long journeys more productive and enjoyable.
“MAMA+” Compartments for Families
Special attention has been given to passengers traveling with children, with one coupe specifically designed under the “MAMA+” concept. In these family-friendly compartments, the width of the sleeping berths is further increased to provide more space and comfort, and the interior is decorated in bright, inviting colors to create a pleasant and engaging travel environment for younger passengers and their parents.
Advanced Specifications and Future Routes
This advanced rolling stock, designated as the “T” gauge, represents a significant upgrade in passenger rail transport. RZD and its manufacturer, Transmashholding (TMH), had previously shared some technical details regarding these new wagons. The carriage length is extended by 73 centimeters compared to standard models, its width by 28 centimeters, the aisle by 9 centimeters, and sleeping berths by 15 centimeters. Furthermore, it has been reported that these new wagons will accommodate 40 seats instead of the usual 36, effectively maximizing capacity without compromising the enhanced comfort and spaciousness.
Oleg Belozerov, CEO of RZD, confirmed during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin that these new, enlarged-gauge coupe carriages are scheduled to begin service on key routes between Moscow and St. Petersburg in the upcoming autumn season, promising a new era of comfortable and modern rail travel.
