Scammers are actively exploiting offers of free device diagnostics to extort money from citizens, posing as repair specialists, according to experts from Roskachestvo (Russian quality system).

The scheme typically begins with advertisements on social media or online marketplaces offering free device checks. When a client responds, the fraudsters propose an online consultation and persuade the victim to install remote access software. Once they gain control over the computer, they either steal sensitive data or install malicious software.

In other scenarios, after a fraudulent free diagnostic, scammers report critical malfunctions and pressure clients into purchasing “necessary” parts at a “discount” via phishing websites.

Another tactic involves disassembling a device under the guise of diagnostics, then demanding payment for reassembly. Occasionally, during the “free” check, scammers intentionally damage components, the operating system, or critical programs to force the client into expensive repairs or a complete reinstallation. This could involve deleting system files, altering settings, or installing incompatible drivers.

To protect themselves, Roskachestvo specialists recommend engaging only with reputable service centers that have a long-standing reputation and positive reviews, and always ensuring a formal service agreement is in place.
