Cybercriminals are installing malicious software (malware) on Russian citizens` computers using an unusual and deceptive method: through fake pop-up windows. This warning comes from Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies, and Communications, and federal coordinator of the “Digital Russia” party project.

According to Nemkin, a common online fraud scheme involves fake pop-up windows that mimic urgent notifications for updating web browsers, media players, or other popular software.

To gain users` trust, these scammers cleverly disguise their prompts to update software or install security features as legitimate messages from well-known companies. Should a user click on such a button, malicious software—including spyware or ransomware—is automatically installed on their device. Nemkin emphasized that the primary goal of these applications is to steal personal data, passwords, and other sensitive, confidential information.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Never update applications via pop-up windows or suspicious, unknown websites.
  • Always download software updates exclusively from the official resources of the software developers.
  • Install reliable antivirus software on your computer and regularly scan your system for digital threats.

Earlier, warnings were also issued about other types of scams, such as fraudulent emails purporting to be from the traffic police (GIBDD). In these instances, fraudsters would falsely inform victims of alleged traffic violations and include links to phishing websites.
