The Russian Interior Ministry has announced that it will not implement stricter regulations for individuals aged 60 and older concerning their eligibility to drive. This decision was conveyed by Irina Volk, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to Volk, Minister of Internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev made this determination after considering expert opinions gathered during public discussions. As a result, item 34, which specifically addressed the interests of road users over 60, has been removed from the draft Road Traffic Safety Strategy.

This particular item had proposed several measures, including:

  • Enhancing mechanisms for evaluating the fitness of individuals aged 60 and above for safe participation in road traffic.
  • Adapting road infrastructure and transport options to better suit elderly citizens.
  • Introducing additional measures aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving senior drivers.
  • Tightening health monitoring requirements for all drivers.

National Road Traffic Safety Strategy

The Presidential Decree endorsing the Road Traffic Safety Strategy for the period up to 2030, with a future outlook extending to 2036, was published on July 11 on the official portal for draft regulatory legal acts. The document was developed based on a comprehensive analysis of road safety data collected over six years. The primary objective of this strategy is to significantly reduce traffic fatalities: by 1.5 times by 2030 and twofold by 2036, compared to the figures recorded in 2023.

Furthermore, the Ministry`s press service indicated earlier in July that the ongoing “Road Safety” project has already led to a notable 20% reduction in the annual number of victims in road accidents.
