The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a public warning regarding the significant dangers associated with social media account breaches by fraudsters. This advisory, disseminated through the “Cyberpolice Bulletin of Russia” Telegram channel by the Department for Combating Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK), highlights various severe repercussions for users.
Cybercriminals exploit compromised social media profiles to pilfer sensitive personal data. This includes, but is not limited to, contact numbers of relatives, and details concerning one`s workplace, educational institution, or home address. Such stolen information is then strategically leveraged to launch subsequent attacks, targeting not only the account owner but also their extended network. Furthermore, scammers frequently unearth private or intimate conversations within messages, which they subsequently use for blackmail against their victims.
Beyond data theft and blackmail, malicious actors often utilize hacked accounts to disseminate content that can severely damage the owner`s reputation. They may also solicit money from the victim`s contacts under false pretenses or spread spam and malicious phishing links carrying viruses. Another common tactic involves gaining unauthorized access to other accounts and services linked to the compromised social media profile. Crucially, a breached social media page grants fraudsters the ability to execute illicit activities while impersonating the legitimate account holder.
