Sony, the renowned Japanese corporation behind PlayStation consoles, also operates in various other sectors such as televisions (where it has seen market share decline), audio equipment, cameras, and general electronics. While the PlayStation brand is perhaps its most recognized, not every venture under this umbrella has been a success, with the PS Vita often cited as a commercial failure. Initially, the PlayStation Portal, a dedicated streaming device, was also anticipated to underperform. However, it defied expectations, becoming a sales success that continues to thrive. Sony has demonstrated a commitment to its users and fans, and the latest PlayStation Portal update delivers a highly anticipated feature: enhanced streaming bitrate through a new ‘1080p high-quality mode’.
Launched in November 2023, precisely three years after the PlayStation 5 console, the PlayStation Portal was initially known by its leaked codename, Project Q. Before its official reveal, many speculated it might be an entirely new console. However, it was ultimately unveiled as an accessory designed to complement the existing PS5. Its primary—and initially almost sole—function was to act as a remote streaming device for the PS5, although its capabilities have expanded since then.
PlayStation Portal’s Latest Software Update Unlocks 1080p High-Quality Mode for Enhanced Streaming Bitrate

Months prior, rumors circulated that Sony was developing a feature to allow PlayStation Portal users to play games without requiring a connected or even owned PS5. This functionality eventually materialized, enabling cloud-based PS5 game streaming and eliminating the need for the console to be physically nearby. This enhancement was well-received by users, contributing to the Portal’s sustained sales success. Sony has now announced a new software update, available from March 17th, introducing a “1080p high-quality mode” for PlayStation Portal owners. This update addresses a long-standing request from most device owners. Users have often noted that the Portal’s streaming bitrate and quality lagged behind PC-based solutions like Moonlight or Artemis with Sunshine/Apollo, which can offer hundreds of Mbps, 4K resolution, 120 FPS, and HDR. The PlayStation Portal has grappled with a comparatively low bitrate since its inception, and the new 1080p high-quality mode is expected to rectify this. Activating the mode is straightforward: simply navigate to the quick menu, select maximum resolution, and choose “1080p High Quality” instead of the standard “1080p.”
Other Update Enhancements Include Improved Trophy Notifications, Game Invites, and Interface Upgrades

Regrettably, there are currently no technical specifications or comparative analyses detailing the exact bitrate difference between the standard 1080p and the new 1080p high-quality modes. We will have to await independent testing to see the precise improvements. However, if Sony has achieved a bitrate of 25-30 Mbps at 1080p, this would be an ideal sweet spot for 60 FPS gaming, offering significantly enhanced quality without drastically increasing bandwidth consumption.
Beyond the high-quality mode, this update brings several other notable improvements. Among the most intriguing are the enhanced trophy notifications: upon unlocking a trophy, its name and corresponding image will now appear, with Platinum trophies receiving a unique special animation. Sony has also refined the product details page, presenting a new user interface when initiating streaming. Another convenient addition is the display of game invitations while playing, ensuring users are promptly notified when friends wish to join a session. Finally, the search screen has been improved for a smoother experience, now displaying the on-screen keyboard immediately upon initiating a search.
