Disruptions in the Starlink satellite internet service were caused by a network infrastructure update.

On the evening of July 24, global access to Starlink services was interrupted for several hours. SpaceX, the service operator, initially attributed the issue to a malfunction in key internal software services, without providing specific details. Later, in a communication to its partners, SpaceX offered a more thorough explanation of the problems.

In a letter to companies involved in selling Starlink terminals, the corporation clarified that SpaceX was updating its network infrastructure prior to the incident. The issues arose unintentionally due to a “rare combination of factors.” This resulted in a complete system reboot during the distribution of traffic across the computing infrastructure.

It was noted that the outage occurred during peak hours for many users in the United States, leaving them without internet access for a period. SpaceX managed to restore service for most users in approximately 2.5 hours.

On July 24, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk apologized to Starlink users for the system malfunction. He assured that the company`s engineers would identify the root cause of the outage to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring in the future.
