RuneScape 4 Announced: A New MMORPG Built on Unreal Engine

October 5, 2026Pablo Navarro2 мин

Jagex revealed RuneScape 4 (RS4) at RuneFest 2026. This new MMORPG, currently a working title, will be the fourth generation in the RuneScape franchise. The significant technological shift for this installment is its development on the Unreal Engine. While the specific version isn't confirmed, it's likely Unreal Engine 5, as UE 6 is slated for Early Access in early 2027. The official launch is anticipated between early and mid-2028.

Jagex emphasizes that RuneScape 4 is in its early development stages and several years away from release. They are sharing the project early to involve the community from the outset. Players can contribute feedback, test concepts, and help shape game systems over the coming years.

RuneScape 4 Will Use Unreal Engine and Coexist with Current Games

Jagex stresses that RuneScape 4 will not replace existing titles like RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Each game will maintain its dedicated development teams, roadmaps, and updates. The new MMORPG is designed as a standalone experience to complement the existing RuneScape universe.

A key innovation is the use of Unreal Engine, leveraging technological experience gained from developing RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex aims to blend these new technical capabilities with their decades of experience in RuneScape and Old School RuneScape development, particularly their approach to community collaboration.

Core RuneScape elements like permanent progression, game integrity, and community-driven development will remain. Details on fundamental systems such as combat, skills, progression, accounts, and subscriptions are yet to be revealed. Platform availability also remains unconfirmed, with ample time for announcements before the game's launch.

The Adventure Begins in Ashenfall, Years After RuneScape: Dragonwilds

RuneScape 4 will return players to Gielinor during the Sixth Age. The adventure commences in Ashenfall, a northeastern continent introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. RS4's story takes place several years after the events of Dragonwilds and the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, meaning Ashenfall will have undergone significant changes.

Ashenfall will serve as the starting point, with Jagex planning to gradually expand RuneScape 4 into other Gielinor regions. This expansion will reintroduce familiar areas alongside new locations, characters, and stories, aiming to build a growing MMORPG rather than a complete world from day one.

There is currently no release date, and Jagex acknowledges the game is still several years away. The studio plans to share more details throughout 2027, including information on the world, game systems, the development team, and community involvement opportunities.
