American corporation Tesla has launched a robotaxi service for a limited number of users. The publication Insider drew attention to this development.

The first rides took place on Sunday, June 22. Currently, the service is only operating in Austin, Texas. The autonomous service is functioning in a limited mode for a small group of users who previously expressed their interest in trying out the new transportation method.

During this initial phase, the cost for a Tesla robotaxi ride is set at a fixed rate of $4.20, which is approximately 350 Russian rubles. According to company head Elon Musk, the vehicles used for the service are new and specifically configured for passenger transport. Musk emphasized that any Tesla electric car can be technically adapted for use in taxi services.

Insider journalists also highlighted the feedback from one of the first users of the service, Chuck Cook. He reported that due to high demand, the wait time for a robotaxi was longer than for a conventional taxi. Cook also mentioned that during the ride, the car performed several complex maneuvers and successfully executed a reverse parking maneuver upon arrival.

In late April, Tesla had previously launched a test mode for robotaxis in the U.S. for its employees. During that earlier testing phase, a safety operator remained behind the wheel of the electric vehicles.
