The Information: Tesla unlikely to meet 5,000 robot target by 2025

Tesla Inc. is reportedly lagging significantly behind CEO Elon Musk`s ambitious target of manufacturing 5,000 humanoid robots by the end of the year, according to a report by The Information.

In March, Musk assured his X (formerly Twitter) followers that Tesla would produce 5,000 Optimus robots by year-end. However, insider reports suggest that the American automotive giant has only completed a few hundred of these humanoid automatons to date.

Journalists noted that this shortfall implies Tesla must either drastically accelerate its production pace or postpone its deadline. They highlighted Musk`s well-known tendency to issue optimistic, often unrealistic, forecasts. For instance, in 2019, he promised a million robotaxis in the U.S. by 2020, a service that ultimately launched only in 2025. Additionally, authors of the report recalled that the humanoid robot assembly line faced a halt in early July due to unresolved issues.

Despite these challenges, Elon Musk recently reiterated Tesla`s commitment to scaling Optimus production. He estimates that the company will achieve an annual output of one million units within the next five years. In late July, the billionaire characterized this as a “reasonable aspiration.”

Separately, Tesla`s financial performance in the second quarter saw its profit decline to $1.172 billion, marking a 16.3 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.
