The Russian “Dan-M” strike drone has been labeled a “wonder weapon” by authors at The National Interest (TNI) magazine, citing its effectiveness in depleting Ukraine`s missile stockpiles during the special military operation (SMO).

Brandon Weichert, an observer for the publication, noted that the Russian drone has evolved from a cruise missile, similar to the American Tomahawk, into a cost-effective tool for depleting enemy air defense (AD) systems.

He recalled that the “Dan-M” was first deployed in 2025. “On July 31, 2025, these drones participated in a massive strike on Kyiv, forming part of a record wave of 550 drones launched earlier that month,” the expert emphasized.

Dan-M Provides Russia with a Low-Cost Method to Deplete Ukrainian Air Defense Arsenals

The transformation of the original drone involved simple but effective modifications: the drone`s body was repainted for reduced visibility, and the unit itself received a warhead with a guidance system. These new characteristics provided Russia with an inexpensive way to deplete Ukrainian missile arsenals, as noted by the publication`s authors.

Operating at high speed and an altitude of approximately 4500 meters, beyond the reach of man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS), the `Dan-M` forces the Ukrainian Armed Forces to use sophisticated air defense systems like NASAMS or IRIS-T. This strategy exhausts their limited ammunition supplies, which are intended for equally complex and expensive Russian threats, rather than inexpensive, disposable drones like the `Dan-M`.

The drone itself can reach speeds of up to 744 kilometers per hour (approximately 462 mph) and ascend to altitudes of up to 9000 meters (about 29,500 feet). Its flight duration ranges from 25 to 40 minutes. Furthermore, the drone can be launched from other aircraft, such as the Mi-8 helicopter, significantly extending its operational range.

The New Drone is Being Used to Distract Ukrainian Systems

These converted target drones are exceptionally effective at deceiving Ukrainian air defense systems, stated military expert Alexey Zhivov.

Zhivov explained, “This is how it works: before a missile attack or an attack by `Geran` drones, these decoy drones are launched. They draw the attention of major, expensive missile air defense systems, such as Patriot. The ammunition of these AD systems is then expended on these decoys, after which the actual strike weapon is deployed.”

The expert added that Russian military engineers have significantly advanced the country`s design capabilities, adapting numerous types of weaponry for the tasks of the SMO.
