American dermatologists have for the first time compiled a list of cosmetic ingredients proven effective against seven of the most common skin problems, ranging from acne to wrinkles. This research, based on an expert consensus method involving dozens of leading skin disease specialists, was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD).

Only components receiving high scores (7-9 out of 9) from the majority of experts made the list. The top-ranked ingredient is mineral sunscreen, recommended for addressing dryness, redness, and signs of photoaging. Retinoids, derivatives of Vitamin A, also hold strong positions, showing effectiveness against acne, pigmentation spots, wrinkles, oily skin, and enlarged pores.

The study is particularly relevant in summer, when consumers are easily swayed by marketing messages and social media recommendations. The authors emphasize that many products contain dozens of active substances, but this does not necessarily make them more effective. Excessive skincare can actually irritate the skin and worsen its condition. According to Professor Murad Alam, the effectiveness of a skincare routine is determined not by the number of products used, but by the precise selection of active components.

Earlier, Japanese researchers discovered an unexpected benefit of Vitamin C. It was found to enhance skin cell growth through epigenetic changes.
