A new study conducted by the National Association of Professional Collection Agencies (NAPCA) reveals that the typical debt collector in Russia is a 36-year-old married woman with a higher education and children. This surprising profile challenges common misconceptions about the profession.

Analysts highlight that, contrary to popular myths, approximately 70% of debt recovery specialists are women. They attribute this trend to the inherent nature of the profession, which prioritizes qualities such as active listening, strong negotiation skills, and patience. These attributes, often associated with women, make them well-suited for debt collection, as evidenced by the statistical data.

The average age of an employee working in a professional debt collection organization (PCO) is around 36 years. However, the analysis also indicates a growing proportion of younger specialists entering the field. Over the past year, the share of professionals under 25 has increased by 2 percentage points, reaching 9% of the total workforce.

The rise in young talent can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, entry-level debt collector positions often do not require prior experience, as new employees undergo comprehensive training and receive initial mentorship. Secondly, the industry offers significant opportunities for career growth. Notably, about 45% of current top managers in PCOs began their careers as frontline debt collectors.

Analysts further emphasize that transparent employment relationships and a competitive compensation structure also contribute to making the debt collection sector an attractive career choice for young professionals.

Regarding educational background, a substantial 85% of debt collection specialists hold a higher education degree. Around 10% of employees have specialized secondary education, while 5% have secondary education.

Given the average age of employees, the vast majority possess prior work experience from other organizations. Approximately 67% of the staff have previously worked in the financial sector, and another 24% have a background in psychology or education, which naturally equips them with excellent communication skills.

The study also found that 80% of PCO employees are officially married, and half of them are parents. Denis Zagrebelny, CEO of `Zaschita Online` PCO, whose comments were included in the research, clarified the role of a debt collector:

“It`s crucial to understand that a debt collector is neither a judge nor an avenger. They are intermediaries who help individuals navigate and resolve challenging financial situations. A debt has a term; it`s not a life sentence. Our fundamental goal is to remind people of this and to offer viable solutions, rather than to worsen their problems.”

This comprehensive statistical portrait of the average debt collector was developed by analyzing consolidated data from over 20,000 employees across Russia`s largest professional debt collection organizations.
