Preview UK Imposes Fine on Apple Subsidiary Over Sanctioned Russian Payments

Apple Distribution International, the Ireland-based arm of tech giant Apple, has been penalized by the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI). The subsidiary received a fine of £390,000 for facilitating two transactions in 2022 that collectively amounted to over £635,000. These payments were made through the App Store to a Russian entity that was subject to international sanctions.

While the fine of £390,000 is a significant sum, it represents a minuscule fraction – approximately 0.00001 percent – of Apple’s substantial annual revenue, making it negligible by the company’s financial scale. Nevertheless, this enforcement action sets a clear precedent regarding compliance with sanctions for global technology platforms operating within the UK’s jurisdiction.
