A new study has revealed an unexpected risk factor for mental health: receiving a first smartphone before the age of 13. A global data analysis, encompassing over 100,000 young adults (aged 18-24), showed that individuals who acquired their first phone at 12 years old or earlier more frequently reported suicidal thoughts, aggression, feelings of derealization, low self-esteem, and poor emotional resilience. This correlation is particularly pronounced in girls, manifesting as reduced self-confidence and stress resistance. The findings were published in the scientific journal Journal of Human Development and Capabilities.

The research, conducted as part of the Global Mind Project, determined that approximately 40% of the observed correlation is linked to early social media use, exposure to cyberbullying, sleep disturbances, and strained family relationships. The general trend indicates that the younger a child receives their first smartphone, the poorer their mental health outcomes tend to be in adulthood.

Given the potential scale of harm, the study`s authors advocate for precautions comparable to restrictions on tobacco and alcohol. Proposed measures include integrating digital literacy into school curricula, strict age verification for digital device users, and a gradual introduction of gadgets into children`s lives.

While smartphones are not the sole threat to mental well-being, it is dangerous to disregard the identified patterns. The earlier a child immerses themselves in the digital environment, the higher the risks to their mental health in later life.

Previous research has already shown that reducing time spent online positively affects cognitive functions and emotional state. Specifically, a temporary break from social media has led to improved sleep quality, reduced anxiety levels, and restored the ability to concentrate.
