A recent survey conducted by the VCIOM Analytical Center indicates that four out of ten (40%) Russian citizens view their retirement years as one of the most joyous and fulfilling periods of their lives. This finding marks a notable increase of 9 percentage points compared to similar data collected in 2020.
The 40% of respondents who hold this positive outlook perceive retirement primarily as a cherished opportunity for a complete break from professional duties. Back in 2020, only 31% of those surveyed shared this sentiment. It`s particularly interesting to note the gender disparity in these views: 44% of women consider retirement a happy time, significantly higher than the 35% of men who share this perspective.
Conversely, less than half of the participants (44%) expressed a contrasting opinion, labeling the retirement phase as challenging. Their concerns stem from a perceived decrease in active social engagement and a substantial reduction in personal income. However, this negative perception has actually softened over time; in 2020, a larger proportion of Russians, 58%, characterized retirement as a difficult stage.
The foundational data for these insights comes from the all-Russian telephone survey, “VCIOM-Sputnik,” which was conducted on September 5, 2025. The survey engaged 1,600 Russian citizens aged 18 and older, and its results carry a maximum margin of error of 2.5% at a 95% confidence level.
