VTB bank has identified a new fraudulent scheme where perpetrators deceive victims into leaving money in mailboxes, claiming it`s for `saving protection`. The bank`s press service announced this.
VTB specialists found this new scheme forces victims to place their savings in mailboxes, ostensibly for `protection`. Fraudsters contact clients, pretending to be bank staff or law enforcement, asserting that their accounts are at risk and the money must be `saved` urgently, the bank warned.
In this particular scam, fraudsters instruct victims to put cash into their personal mailbox or a designated mail slot at an address and apartment number they provide. Shortly after, an accomplice acting as a courier retrieves the money from the box.
“This is a new spin on the classic `safe keeping` scam,” commented Dmitry Revyakin, VTB Vice President. “Criminals have devised a method to trick even individuals who are hesitant to transfer money to strangers. It`s crucial to understand that your funds are only secure in the account you opened yourself with your bank.”
VTB advises against following any instructions from unknown individuals aimed at `saving` your money to protect yourself from this type of fraud.
“Remember that banks and law enforcement agencies will never ask you to move money, particularly cash, under the guise of protecting it,” the bank emphasized.
