WhatsApp has uncovered an Italian spyware operation targeting iPhone users with a deceptive version of its messaging app. The company informed approximately 200 individuals, predominantly in Italy, that they had unknowingly installed government spyware disguised as WhatsApp. This sophisticated fake application was engineered by SIO, an Italian surveillance technology firm, operating through its subsidiary ASIGINT. SIO and ASIGINT specialize in developing surveillance tools for law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
