Archaeologists have uncovered a molar tooth belonging to a young woolly mammoth in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod. The discovery was made at a depth of approximately two meters within the Pochainsky Ravine, near Rozhdestvenskaya Street. Gleb Nikitin, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, announced this significant finding via his Telegram channel.
According to research, mammoths inhabited the Middle Volga region until a period of rapid climate warming began about 11,000 years ago. Changes in vegetation ultimately led to their extinction, yet their remains continue to be found in the region even today, providing valuable insights into ancient ecosystems.
This is not the first paleontological discovery of its kind in the city`s heart. In the 1930s, fragments of a mammoth skull, complete with two upper molars, were previously unearthed at the base of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. This new artifact further corroborates that the territory now known as Nizhny Novgorod Oblast was once home to these magnificent ancient giants.
Residents of the Astrakhan region have also contributed to unique paleontological discoveries. Notably, in June, two-meter-long woolly mammoth tusks were successfully retrieved from a body of water in the Ikryaninsky District, highlighting the widespread presence of these ancient creatures across various Russian territories.
