Preview Reddit Users Outraged: Company Blocks Mobile Web Access, Forces App Usage

Reddit, a globally recognized social media platform, is experiencing significant user backlash. While less popular in some regions, it boasts hundreds of millions of users, particularly in the United States, where they constitute nearly half of its audience. Reddit distinguishes itself from other social networks by focusing on community-driven support and discussion across its vast array of subreddits, rather than on personal life updates.

Historically, many users have accessed Reddit via their mobile devices through its web interface. However, the company has recently started blocking this access, effectively compelling users to exclusively use the official app. This decision affects a platform with an estimated 750 million registered users worldwide and approximately 73 million daily active users, with some speculating it may surpass X (formerly Twitter) in active users.

A key advantage of Reddit has been its anonymity feature, allowing users to create private profiles without revealing personal information or photos while still accessing the platform’s full functionality. Furthermore, users can browse content without even requiring an account.

Reddit Initiates Tests Forcing App Download on a Select Group of Users

While PC users continue to access Reddit through its website, mobile users have the option of either the web or the official app. The app includes advertisements, which many users, particularly those employing ad-blocking software, prefer to avoid by using the web version. Although the app offers a more streamlined experience, the blocking of mobile web access leaves users with fewer choices.

The Reddit community is protesting this restrictive measure. While the implementation appears to be in a testing phase and not yet widespread, some users report being prompted to download the app to continue using Reddit, with others still able to access the web version. A Reddit spokesperson confirmed that tests have begun with a small group of users who frequently log out on mobile, and these individuals are receiving notifications to download the app.

Reddit Users Threaten to Leave if App Usage Becomes Mandatory

According to Reddit, this transition from mobile web to app is intended to enhance the user experience with improved search capabilities, personalized feeds, and community tracking. While these improvements may appeal to some, individual preferences vary. The continued existence of the “old.reddit” interface, reminiscent of earlier web designs, highlights the diverse needs and preferences of its user base.

The move to restrict mobile web access has generated considerable criticism within the community. While currently limited to a small user segment, many have vowed to abandon Reddit if this policy is implemented globally, emphasizing their preference for accessing the platform via the web.
