Stanford University’s annual AI Index report for 2026 reveals an increasing disparity in how artificial intelligence is perceived. The report from the Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) documents a growing disconnect between the optimistic outlook of AI experts and the increasing anxiety experienced by the general public.
Key findings indicate a rapid rise in frustration and anger regarding AI among Generation Z. Concurrently, employment in fields heavily influenced by AI is already showing a decline among younger workers. Furthermore, the United States ranks last among surveyed nations in terms of public trust in its government’s ability to effectively regulate AI.
