Apple's strategic shift away from Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD in 2020, opting for its proprietary Arm-based chips, marked a turning point. The M1 chip, launched during this period, achieved considerable success. The company is now in its fifth generation of these chips, with the M5 Ultra variant demonstrating remarkable GPU performance in recent Geekbench 7 tests.

M5 Ultra GPU Outperforms M3 Ultra by 41% and RTX 5080 by 26% in Geekbench Metal Benchmark

The Apple M5 Ultra chip exhibits exceptional power, as evidenced by recent Geekbench 7 results. Earlier tests showcased its 36-core CPU surpassing AMD's 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX. Now, new GPU benchmarks in Geekbench reveal a Metal score of 360,019 points.

This score represents a substantial 41% improvement over the 255,009 points achieved by the M3 Ultra's GPU. Furthermore, when compared to NVIDIA's high-end RTX 5080, the M5 Ultra demonstrates superiority. While benchmark methodologies differ (Apple utilizes Metal, while NVIDIA typically employs OpenCL), the M5 Ultra's score of 360,019 points positions it 26% ahead of the RTX 5080's score of 284,429 points.

M5 Ultra Shows Competitive Performance Against NVIDIA's RTX 5080 in Specific Tasks

Direct comparisons between the M5 Ultra and the RTX 5080 in certain benchmarks offer valuable insights. In horizon detection, the RTX 5080 shows a slight edge. However, for background blur effects, the M5 Ultra proves to be three times faster. The chip also excels in Face Tracking, where it achieves an impressive 589,323 points compared to the NVIDIA graphics card's 74,241 points.

Conversely, the RTX 5080 demonstrates a significant advantage in particle physics simulations, scoring 902,982 points, more than double the M5 Ultra's 373,097 points. While these benchmarks are not perfectly analogous due to differing testing frameworks, they provide a general indication of the M5 Ultra GPU's formidable capabilities.
