MSI Modern 14S and 16S: Promising Direct Rivals to MacBook Neo with Intel Wildcat Lake CPUs

MSI unveiled two intriguing ultrabooks, the Modern 16S and Modern 14S, in Tokyo. These devices are specifically designed to challenge Apple's new MacBook Neo. Apple currently commands significant industry attention, having transformed from a company known for exorbitant prices and outdated hardware to one offering highly competitive products in both performance and cost.

The reason for this competition is clear: at the MacBook Neo's price point (€699), finding a comparable Windows laptop is exceptionally difficult. While some Windows options might offer superior raw performance, none at that price can match the Neo's combination of performance, exceptional battery life (up to 16 hours), and the efficiency of its operating system, which runs smoothly on just 8GB of RAM. In contrast, Windows 11 laptops typically require 16GB of RAM, significantly increasing their overall cost.

Introducing the MSI Modern 14S and Modern 16S: Designed to Rival the MacBook Neo

A key aspect of the MSI Modern 14S and Modern 16S is their utilization of the new Intel Wildcat Lake processors, paired with a single DDR5 DRAM memory slot. This configuration strongly suggests a focus on maximizing cost efficiency. The processor is confirmed to be an Intel Core Series 3 from this new family, complemented by the single DDR5 RAM slot and a PCIe 4.0 M2 SSD.

Depending on the model, users will find a 14-inch or 16-inch IPS panel featuring a Full HD+ resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. Connectivity options include two USB-C ports with fast charging, enabling a 0-50% charge in just 30 minutes, alongside two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, an HDMI video output, and a microSD card reader. These components are housed within an aluminum chassis measuring 17.9mm thick, powered by a 42 Whr battery with 65W charging. The MSI Modern 16S weighs 1.70 kg, while the 14S comes in at 1.4 kg (compared to the MacBook's 12.7mm thickness and 1.23 kg weight).

Additional features include a 1 Gbps Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3 wireless connectivity. A significant bonus is the MIL-810H military certification, ensuring resistance to impacts and drops. As expected, these laptops run Windows 11 and boast a large touchpad and a smudge-resistant keyboard. Crucial details, such as the official launch date and pricing, remain undisclosed. For these devices to genuinely compete with the MacBook Neo, they would need to be priced at or below €699.

Additionally: A More Powerful, Higher-Priced Variant

Complementing these models will be the MSI Modern 14S AI+ and Modern 16S AI+ versions. These "AI+" variants will upgrade to Intel Panther Lake processors, specifically Intel Core Ultra Series 3, supporting two DDR5 RAM modules instead of just one. All other specifications, including connectivity, stereo speaker system, chassis thickness, and weight, remain identical. However, in addition to more powerful hardware, these models feature a larger 60 Wh battery to offset the increased power consumption.

These AI+ models are likely less appealing due to their anticipated higher price points. Therefore, the focus now shifts to awaiting the launch of the Wildcat Lake processor models, along with details on their performance, battery life, and overall ability to truly challenge the MacBook Neo within the Windows 11 ecosystem.
