RPCS3 Emulator Achieves Major Optimization Milestone: 5-7% FPS Boost in Demanding PS3 Games Across All CPUs
In just a few months, the PlayStation 3 will celebrate two decades since its launch in November 2006. At the time, this console represented a major technological leap, allowing players to enjoy games at 720p and even 1080p with significantly more advanced graphics and textures compared to its predecessor, the PS2. Many consider it the last generation to offer such a drastic graphical improvement. Fortunately, these classics are accessible today thanks to emulators like RPCS3. Recently, the emulator has made a significant stride, improving performance in demanding games and marking a notable advancement in the emulation of the PS3's Cell CPU.
Emulation offers the crucial advantage of preserving access to games. Once a console is discontinued, titles cease to be commercially available, eventually becoming more difficult and expensive to acquire and enjoy. The original gaming experience often involves seeking out consoles and video games whose prices can multiply considerably due to demand and scarcity.
RPCS3 Achieves Further Performance Optimization in SPU-Intensive Games
Modern PCs possess considerable power, making emulation increasingly viable. Even some high-end smartphones with Qualcomm chips can emulate various consoles. For users of the RPCS3 PS3 emulator, there's excellent news: developers have reported a significant breakthrough. Thanks to contributor 'Elad', who identified new SPU usage patterns, more optimized PC code has been generated, resulting in a 5-7% FPS improvement across games. This marks an important milestone in the emulation of the PS3's Cell CPU.
The remarkable aspect of this optimization is that the 5-7% improvement in average FPS applies to all titles, representing a global enhancement in emulation. Games that benefit most are those with intensive SPU usage, such as Twisted Metal. Demonstrations show that FPS can even exceed the 7% improvement (for instance, from 47.85 FPS to 52.17 FPS during a pause), while SPU usage slightly decreases and RSX usage increases.
Performance Improvements Benefit All CPUs, Including an AMD Athlon 3000G
Performance comparisons for Twisted Metal reveal that the frametime in the updated version is much more consistent, with fewer peaks, resulting in a more stable experience. James Stanard, who developed 90% of Twisted Metal's SPU code for PS3 in 2012, confirmed that the game is extremely intensive, constantly pushing the SPU, PPU, and RSX to their limits. He expressed satisfaction with this breakthrough, which manages to improve performance despite the title's demanding nature.
An additional positive note is that this optimization is not limited to high-end hardware; it extends to all PC CPUs. As an example, a user reported a performance improvement in Gran Turismo 5 using a modest AMD Athlon 3000G, a dual-core processor considered low-end since 2019.
