If you own an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, you might be interested in the latest innovation to emerge on Kickstarter: the Selfix iPhone. This is a comprehensive case that does more than just protect your device. It also features a secondary screen, designed to help you capture high-quality video selfies or photos by leveraging the iPhone's superior main camera. Additionally, it integrates a microSD card slot, allowing you to expand your smartphone's storage.
Clearly, this case is ideal for those who constantly use their smartphone to upload images or videos to social media. The primary purpose of having a second screen on your iPhone is to use it as a viewfinder when taking photos or videos with the phone reversed, thus capitalizing on the high-quality main cameras instead of the front-facing selfie camera. Furthermore, this secondary display is compatible with any camera application. Being touch-sensitive, it also allows for quick and easy adjustments, framing, and focusing.
A Closer Look: The Selfix iPhone Case for iPhone 17 Pro
The Selfix iPhone is introduced as the world's first selfie case specifically designed for iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. It features a 1.6-inch circular AMOLED panel with a resolution of 480 x 480 pixels. This screen mirrors what is displayed on your device's main screen, meaning that once you open the camera app, its operation will be identical to using it without the case. To enable this, the case connects to the iPhone via the USB-C port. For the screen to be fully functional as a touch interface, AssistiveTouch must be activated in iOS.
Another significant feature of the Selfix iPhone case is its integrated microSD card reader. It supports UHS-I / Class 10 / U3 / V30 cards with capacities of up to 2 TB. However, due to Apple's inherent limitations, you cannot directly record videos or save photos to the microSD card. iOS only permits recording to external storage in very specific scenarios, such as ProRes.
All the benefits of the Selfix iPhone case are delivered while maintaining the ability to use the USB-C port, thanks to a pass-through feature with Power Delivery 3.0 supporting up to 45W. The case also includes a physical power button and compatibility with MagSafe magnetic accessories.
Additional Information, Availability, and Price
The Selfix iPhone isn't without its compromises. While it retains the magnets for MagSafe accessories, it does not support MagSafe wireless charging. This is because the secondary screen creates too much distance between the charger's coils and the iPhone. Practically, this means you can still use magnetic grips, rings, or certain stands. However, if you use this case and wish to charge your device, you can only do so via the USB-C port. It also adds thickness and generates some heat.
The Selfix iPhone case isn't for everyone, but it certainly has a market, particularly for content creators or anyone constantly taking selfies. Proof of its appeal is evident on Kickstarter, where 136 individuals have already backed the project, generating nearly €12,000 in revenue. This is a significant achievement, considering their initial goal was just over €4,000, with 21 days of funding still remaining. The starting price for the Selfix iPhone case is €69 for both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. It is available in white, pink, and black.
