Steam Dictates Hardware Trends: The Most Used PC Features 8 Cores and 16 GB of RAM, Are AMD Ryzen X3D Processors to Blame?
Each month, Steam's hardware statistics are updated, providing insights into the evolving PC gaming landscape. These updates allow us to observe market trends, identify popular products, and track rapid shifts in user preferences. While graphics card trends tend to remain relatively stable, the July 2026 Steam hardware survey has shown notable changes in CPU and RAM, with 8 cores and 16 GB of RAM now being the most common configurations.
Steam has solidified its position as the premier PC gaming platform and store, maintaining its dominance since its inception. Competitors like Epic Games have yet to match Steam's vast player community. Beyond its platform, Valve has also been responsible for developing iconic game franchises such as Half-Life and has created hardware like the Steam Machine, Steam Deck, and Steam Controller. Despite these ventures, Valve is most strongly associated with Steam, its most significant achievement and the unifying hub for its various products and devices.
July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey Reveals Growth of AMD 8-Core CPUs, Likely Driven by X3D Models
Steam's community, comprising tens of millions of players, voluntarily provides information about their PC hardware, making these surveys invaluable. The Steam hardware surveys offer insights into component popularity and their evolution over time. For instance, the May survey noted the initial appearance of the RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT. By the July survey, the RX 9070 XT had increased its share to 1.4%, and the RX 9060 XT reached 0.84%.
However, the most striking changes are seen in CPU statistics. AMD has gained +0.42% in July, reaching 45.34% and closing the gap with Intel. Processor speeds also show significant movement, with a +0.60% increase for AMD CPUs running at over 3.7 GHz. When combined with the substantial rise in 8-core processors, which increased by 0.38%, the trend becomes clear: players are increasingly purchasing processors like the Ryzen 7800X3D/9800X3D, or even the 5800X3D, which align with these specifications.
Surprising Popularity of GPUs with 16 GB VRAM, from Arc B580 to RTX 5080
Examining other statistics from the July survey, the most prevalent memory configuration remains 16 GB, though it has seen a slight decrease. In contrast, 8 GB and 32 GB configurations have seen the most significant increases, despite holding second and third place, respectively.
Interestingly, within the graphics card section, while the RTX 3060 remains the most popular card overall, the VRAM category reveals a significant trend: 16 GB of VRAM is now the most popular choice, accounting for a substantial 25.90% (a +1.40% increase) of Steam players. This surpasses 8 GB VRAM, which holds 25.32%. This data suggests that Steam users are increasingly investing more in their GPUs to enjoy games with higher graphics settings and frame rates.
